Saving Costa Rica's Rainforest for Future Generations

Preserving the last remaining stands of old-growth rainforest

Home to massive 500 year-old trees towering 10 stories tall, Costa Rica’s old-growth rainforests are an ecological treasure. Unfortunately, deforestation from the 1940-1980’s destroyed 90% of Costa Rica’s original ancient primary rainforest. Less than 10% of Costa Rica’s original old-growth rainforest remains.

Costa Rica is celebrated for taking strong action to restore forest to 50% of its land via second-growth rainforest. But the ecological functions and biodiversity of ancient old-growth rainforest simply can’t be replaced, since it takes hundreds of years to develop. With the destruction of this rich habitat, many species are now endangered – Costa Rica has over 3800 endangered species.

It’s critical for these at-risk species’ survival to protect the few remaining stands of old-growth Costa Rican primary rainforest. But shockingly, areas of old-growth rainforest are still being sold for as little as $2000 per acre, often to be cut down for monoculture plantations.

The newly-established Costa Rica Rainforest Fund addresses this issue by acquiring and preserving the remaining unprotected stands of old-growth rainforest.

Come hear about the launch of this exciting new initiative in a live webinar with Dr. Sam Williams of Macaw Recovery Network, the nonprofit organization leading this effort to preserve Costa Rica’s primary rainforest.
